Like all strains, The Great Fire is a blend of a couple greats: Super Lemon Haze and Sanjay Gupta Kush. Super Lemon Haze, a heavy Sativa, won the High Times Cannabis Cup in both 2008 and 2009, and is widely loved for its creativity boosting effects, as well as being extremely therapeutic for those dealing with anxiety, depression, and lack of appetite. Gupta Kush is an even indica/sativa blend, developed specifically for medicinal use, and is praised for helping severe pain. The Great Fire pulls from both to create a bud ideal for both medicinal and creative use.

Appearance 5/5
All of r007’s one gram selections come in slim, simple, white zip-locks with approved seals. The Great Fire’s burgundy hairs dominate this dark green bud, giving it a rusty, Fall-like appearance. Each nug is ultra compact, and requires a grinder to break it down for adequate use. Utterly intriguing because of its strong red hues, The Great Fire begs to be tasted.

Aroma 5/5
Despite being a red-tone bud, The Great Fire’s aroma is notably bright, just like its Lemon Haze roots. The acidity cuts through the usual smell of cannabis, and lets the consumer know that it will be a pleasant high. After breaking up the flower, a more pungent, traditionally earthy smell takes over, as the red hairs get evenly dispersed. Upon lighting, the lemon scent resurges, leaving a pleasantly fresh aroma in the air.

Taste 5/5
Lemon ganja is the simplest way of describing The Great Fire’s initial taste, as well. Yet, as the hit develops, the spiciness of its Gupta Kush roots pulls through. Each draw is a satisfying play between the two flavors. Despite its high THC concentration of just over 30% (THC + THCA), this bud is smooth, and provokes little cough, if any. The freshness of the Lemon Haze leaves a clean aftertaste, and a desire for another toke.

Effect 5/5
The effects of strains are, of course, dependent on each individual’s current state of mind and health, yet many will find this strain to produce euphoric and creative sensations. A happy, slight tingle in the head, and light body buzz throughout, The Great Fire is smoother than its name implies, but still sparks in all the right ways. The medicinal effects are also worth noting. CGBA is known as the “mother” of all cannabinoids, because all cannabinoids stem from it (Benjamin, Wikileaf). The Great Fire’s 3.06%, offering is uniquely high, due to its interesting composition, that is relaxing, all while delivering positive energy.

The Great Fire is a phrase that all Chicagoans can relate to. Though no one is still alive to retell their experiences, the Great Fire is the “never forget” event in Chicago’s history. A strain with the same name must also live up to that legacy. For beginner smokers, this strain could easily make you giggle, and has a larger amount of cannabinoids than others. More seasoned smokers will be pleased with the lively vibe provided by The Great Fire.

The high CGBA content of The Great Fire is worth highlighting, due to its medicinal attributes (national average is 1% LINK). CGBA is particularly useful for aiding in depression and some metabolic disorders, as well as acting as an anti-inflammatory agent (Havelka, Leafly 2019).

The Great Fire is a strain that sticks out as the kind that inspires silly moments between friends, that gives energy to any moment, and allows for enjoyment, even indoors. Non-drowsiness is effective for those looking to address certain medical issues and remain active. Its dark red edge and intincing lemon smell are a reminder of the good things in life, the comfort of Fall, and the timelessness of Summer.

In spite of all the challenges, Mission Dispensaries continues to hold strong on the southside. As things get a little boring outside, this strain is one to look for. Inspired by Chicago’s history, its name is also a reminder that the city has been through rough times before, and has held together. And so can we.

Mission Dispensaries South Shore is now one of the few recreational/adult-use dispensaries that is still functioning in Chicago since the coronavirus. Their mission: to stay open and serve the community, is not easy since safety is taken very seriously.

Despite the lines, Mission staff were outside in the cold with those waiting to enter, taking orders, checking for medicinal card holders, and thanking everyone for their patience. Inside, a clean environment and the welcoming staff had all orders already efficiently placed, and the checkout area was marked with tape to remind folks of keeping space.

Since then, an even easier way of placing and picking up orders has been implemented to avoid extended wait lines, and limit the time in and out of the dispensary. Hour slots are chosen as pick-up times online, while orders are taken by phone. Medical card holders can still place orders online or walk in, without having to wait in line.

Despite this pressure, once you step into the building it seems like nothing has changed. The staff is just as welcoming, and they’re more than willing to attend to customers’ questions and needs– even in the snow (though, it’s technically Spring).

It is clear to all that Mission is recognizing the service that adult-use dispensaries provide. As they address the new reality, and as consumers enter into a new period of self-care, Mission has decided to do what is necessary to keep their doors open.
