Kimbo Kush, named after mixed martial artist Kimbo Slice, comes from a cross between Blackberry Kush and Starfighter. Even though it contains only 15.18% THC and 0.23% CBD, this Indica-dominant hybrid is known to knock out its user, just like Kimbo knocked out his opponents.
Justice Grown is a national cannabis company founded in 2014 by civil rights attorneys in Chicago. They sell products in seven states, including Illinois.
Appearance 3/5
This gram of Kimbo Kush from Justice Grown contained three airy nugs about 1” tall, plus another little bonus bud. They are triangular and flat as if they were grown packed in next to each other, without room to form.
These buds do not have the appearance of the high-quality cannabis I’ve seen in the dispensaries. In fact, they look almost homegrown. They are soft and delicate, easily pulled apart like pillow stuffing. Their color is uniform army green, other than the brown hairs wrapped around the buds. They have a slight shimmer from the dusting of kief on the outside.
Aroma 4/5
This strain has a unique aroma that can be smelled immediately when the container is open. The most prominent notes of this aggressive aroma are spearmint and pine, although much of it is hard to pin down. There are mild sour and floral notes, and there is a subtle soapiness in the aroma, too. There are hints of cinnamon and thyme, as well. More than anything, this strain smells like Christmas potpourri.
The worst part of the aroma is that, after smoking Kimbo Kush, my hands reeked as I had just smoked a cigarette.
Taste 3/5
Kimbo Kush has a unique flavor that has three main notes: tobacco, spices, and pine. While the notes of pine were subtle and pleasant, the tobacco flavor was overpowering. If I didn’t grind the flower myself I would have questioned if I was smoking a spliff.
I am not one to go around calling things too spicy, but this strain was too spicy. It has both the heat of ground white pepper and the sharp earthiness of black pepper. It reminded me of a vinegar-heavy hot sauce on a Christmas tree. There was a twinge of a harsh chlorine or bleach flavor at the end of the hit.
Effect 4/5
The effects of Kimbo Kush were subtle and immediate. Halfway through the joint, I was relaxed and tired. I felt calm, and the world appeared to be brighter than normal. This Indica-dominant hybrid made me feel physically relaxed and emotionally numb. I felt like my anxiety had been erased. This strain was especially physically sedating, and I didn’t want to stand up or do anything.
While this strain didn’t provide the strongest or most exciting effects, it provided the least amount of negative side effects. It didn’t make my mouth or eyes dry, and I wasn’t paranoid or worried.
Product price: $24.95 for 1g
I recommend this strain to people who enjoy a full range of flavors in their cannabis, including tastes that are more unique. I think cigarette smokers would enjoy this strain, or people using cannabis to help quit smoking since it has a similar flavor. The tobacco flavor of this strain is extremely strong, so I would recommend that anyone who is put off by that flavor choose a different strain.
This gram is very different from most of the cannabis I’ve been trying from the dispensaries. It has an earthy, homegrown feel and an exceptionally spicy profile. This is probably the spiciest strain I’ve tried, in both smell and taste. While the effects of this strain were average, the uniqueness of this strain is exciting. It takes me back to a time before cannabis was bred for the sweetest, fruitiest flavors.

For the first time, I was able to make an impulsive trip to the dispensary. For the last four months, I have been planning my trips the night before, strategizing so I have to spend the least amount of time waiting. But last week, I checked their menu and saw they had three things that I wanted to try. I was able to add them to my cart immediately and submit my order the next hour at 4 pm.
They texted me that my order was ready to be picked up at 4:06. I arrived at the dispensary 35 minutes later, and I lined up on Clark Street, where the traffic cones are marked six feet apart. There were two people in front of me, but within minutes, I was admitted into the waiting room.
Almost immediately after they scanned my ID, I was admitted into the dispensary, where I waited first in line for about 10 minutes. One of the debit card machines was down, which slowed down the line.
The budtender who helped me was friendly. He looked up my order with my driver’s license rather than asking for my order number, and pulled my order from a bag in the back. I asked him if it was possible for him to print an old receipt for me, and he quickly pulled it up and handed me a copy.
Service has slowed down a bit from late April when everything was running with impeccable efficiency. But since they plan to open the second Chicago location in River North before the end of the month, I would expect service at Sunnyside Lakeview to be slower. I also expect the stock to be lower because, for the last two months, I have purchased several products that say “Sunnyside – River North” on the dispensary label.
