Bubba Diagonal is an indica strain from the parents Bubba and Triangle Kush. This gram from Grassroots Cannabis has a moderate THC percentage of 18.33%.
The motto of Grassroots Cannabis is to “live deeply.” The company informs their customers by having a complete library of the heritage and reported effects of all the strains they grow for their various flowers, concentrates, and vapes.
Appearance 4/5
This gram of Bubba Diagonal came with five small nugs. Their texture was firm, almost prickly, and they were wonky, rather than perfectly shaped.
These army green nugs are covered in light yellow kief. There are some brown hairs peeking out from the buds, as well as some specks of purple peeking out from beneath the powder. These buds are a little bit dry, but they are still some good looking buds.
This is packaged in a small container, akin to something gummy vitamins would be packaged in.
Aroma 4/5
Bubba Diagonal has a very tart aroma. It reminds me of freshly squeezed juice from sour citrus, like grapefruit or lime. There isn’t even a hint of sweetness in the aroma. There is a small amount of a potent floral aroma, almost like perfume, however. There is also a subtle earthiness in the aroma that brings another level of complexity to the scent. The aroma of Bubba Diagonal is pleasant and fragrant, but it still smells very tart.
Taste 3/5
The taste of Bubba Diagonal is dry, harsh, and overall pretty unimpressive. While there isn’t anything unpleasant about the taste of this strain, earning it a score of 3/5, it’s pretty bland. I could tell you that the taste is slightly waxy, with notes of tobacco and coffee grounds–but really, it just tastes like slightly dry weed.
I smoked most of this gram in unfiltered joints with rice papers, but I tried it in a glass pipe to see if that did anything for the flavor. It didn’t.
Effect 5/5
Bubba Diagonal made me feel relaxed and pleasantly detached. This strain put me in a stony daze, even after one or two hits. After a whole joint of Bubba Diagonal, I felt blissful. I was calm and sedated, and my muscles felt relaxed. I felt pleasantly unaware, and I had a hard time focusing. While I felt that my brain and body were moving slowly, I didn’t feel sleepy. Unlike many indicas, this strain didn’t put me to sleep, but it also has a much lower THC content than many strains at 18.33%.
Product price: $22.97 for 1g
Bubba Diagonal is a great indica for daytime and evening use. While it has calming and relaxing effects, it doesn’t have the drowsiness that comes with many indicas. The effects also fade away cleanly, which makes it appropriate for daytime use.
For a bud with a moderate THC percentage, this strain had very pleasant effects, even though it didn’t get me super baked, like the high-THC strains I’ve been seeing a lot of at dispensaries. Even though the flower was a little dry, I was impressed with the quality. This encourages me to try more flower from Grassroots Cannabis.

After a dozen trips to Sunnyside’s Lakeview spot, I finally checked out a different Sunnyside location. I went to their new recreational-only location, which is just a few miles down Clark Street from the Lakeview store. I chose to go to this location because they had a wide variety of menu items. I’ve also just been curious.
After placing my online order, I went to the waiting area on Hubbard to check-in. I walked into an old bar, and stood third in line, in front of a podium.
The gentleman at the podium was explaining to customers that they needed an online order to get cannabis from the dispensary, but they could sit down and place their order in the waiting room, and the process should go pretty quickly. Luckly, this former restaurant still had its booths, along with plenty of room for social distancing.
When I got to the counter, he looked at my confirmation text, my ID, and took down my phone number. He quoted me a five to ten minute wait-time. I got a second text from Sunnyside (a different phone number from the confirmation text from my online order) saying, “You’ve been added to the Sunnyside* River North waitlist. See your place in line here:” with a link. Exactly ten minutes later, I got a text that said, “It’s your turn to check in, please return to the host stand within 5 minutes to claim your place in line.”
I returned to the host stand and waited for the host to print my ticket, before being sent to the dispensary a block and a half away. The process was confusing and took much longer than Lakeview–but they’ve only been open for a month during a pandemic, a week of which they weren’t even open because of a break in, so I should be patient.
Then, I showed my ticket and my ID to the staff in the dispensary. They pulled up my order and processed my debit card payment. I was on my way home about five minutes later.
