Cake Mix is a rare strain that originated in California. It is a three way cross between Cherry Pie, Girl Scout Cookies, and Triangle Kush.

The Cake Mix Pre-roll contains 1 gram of premium cannabis, with a THC content of 27.1%. It is produced by the Illinois grower, Ascend in a collaboration with Cookies, a California cannabis company that specializes in exotic and original strains.

Appearance 5/5
This pre-roll came in a small pinch-top tube that was the vibrant blue of the Cookies brand, with the logo in white at the top. The pre-roll was less than an inch shorter than the tube, and the filter was also blue, with the brand name in white.

The most unique thing about the Cookies pre-rolls is that, rather than twisting the top up to form a little tail, they fold the top of the rolling paper over the joint so that the tip of the joint is indented, instead of protruding.

Aroma 4/5
The aroma of this strain was not particularly strong. While the aroma of other Cookie’s joints I purchased wafted through the paper, I could hardly notice any scent from this joint.

Unwrapped, the aroma of the Cake Mix cannabis was still mild, but pleasant and complex. The buttery aroma was slightly sweet and sour. There were fruity notes of lemon and pineapple, along with more delicate notes of vanilla and caramel. The aroma also had slight skunky undertones.

Taste 5/5
It’s no wonder that Cake Mix has such an enticing name because it’s one of the most delicious strains I have tried. The flavor reminds me of the Mexican shortbread cookies with the dulce de leche filling. It is smooth and buttery, with a twinge of sweetness, but not too much. There is a slight spicy flavor, too, along with notes of pine, and a subtle maltiness. Although this strain is not too sweet in the beginning, it has a sweet, berry finish.

Effect 5/5
I felt the effects of this strain almost immediately. After just two hits, I felt peaceful, relaxed, and alert. At first, I felt focused and introspective. A few minutes after I stopped smoking, a physical softness and numbness set in. This strain made me feel confident, happy, and uplifted.

This strain comes from one indica (Triangle Kush), and two indica-dominant hybrids (Cherry Pie and Girl Scout Cookies). This allows the strain to have the strong physical relaxation of an indica, while preserving just the smallest bit the alert, uplifting effects of a sativa which makes this strain feel very well-rounded.

Product price: $24.95

I recommend that people smoke Cookies joints as they come, rather than unrolling them, and using the loose cannabis elsewhere. I unrolled half the joint and smoked the other half as-is. I wish I would have smoked the whole thing as it came. Cookies joints are packed well, have a nice, solid filter, and are rolled in thin white papers that burn evenly.

I was shocked at how much better the taste and effects of Cake Mix were than some of the big-name strains I’ve been trying from the dispensary. This goes to show that just because a strain is the most popular, that does not make it the best. Cookies is run by the breeder who created GSC, and he has not stopped creating new strains with optimal taste, effects, and innovative genetics.

The night before my last trip to Sunnyside, around 6:20pm, I added all four of my items to the cart. Much to my surprise, the submission button was active. This is the first time I have seen an ordering window in the evening. Even though I didn’t really want to venture out to Sunnyside that evening, I pressed it to see if I could. While the button stayed active for about a minute, my order would not submit. The site kept giving me an error about how they were unable to submit a “rec” order that contains vaping products. I don’t know how to make sense of that error, but all of the items stayed in my cart for submission the next morning.

As always, I was prepared with my iPad open to my Sunnyside cart long before noon when they open the online ordering to recreational customers. They surprised me once again by opening the ordering window at 11 rather than noon. I submitted my order, and they texted me to tell me it was ready at 11:36. I arrived a half hour later.

When I went to Sunnyside Dispensary the week before, I had to wait outside for about 10 minutes. This time, when I arrived, they were ushering in the last person from the outdoor line, and they allowed me to walk right into the waiting room.

Almost immediately, the three customers in front of me in line were admitted into the dispensary, and I was at the front of the line in the waiting room. I waited there for about 10 minutes. Then, I waited another 10 minutes inside the dispensary. The gentleman behind me was cursing out loud about how long it was taking. Clearly he was new to Sunnyside, because twenty minutes is nothing.

With the reduced wait times and increased opportunity for online ordering, it seems that the chaos of a dispensary visit in the first four months of legalization is slowly subsiding.
