The Pheno 51 pre-roll contains a full gram of bud. The strain was developed by Cresco Labs, the parent company of Sunnyside Dispensaries. It is a cross between Star Killer and Skywalker OG, both Indica-dominant hybrids. Skywalker OG is actually one of Star Killer’s parents, which makes Pheno 51 a genetic blend of 3⁄4 Skywalker OG and 1⁄4 Rare Darkness #2, Star Killer’s other parent.

Appearance 5/5
The joint came in a green box, which was about six inches long. The box is green, which Cresco Labs uses to indicate that it’s a hybrid strain (Sativa is red, and Indica is blue). Inside, the joint is contained in a lightweight, clear plastic tube.

I’ve noticed that the contents of pre-rolls I have bought from dispensaries in the past are dry and shaky. However, the flower in this joint is still a vibrant green and has a soft, fresh texture, rather than being crumbly and brown.

Aroma 4/5
The aroma of the Pheno 51 pre-roll matches almost exactly the stereotypical scent of cannabis I have in my mind. While many strains I am finding in dispensaries these days have bright, floral aromas, Pheno 51 has a dark musk. I really enjoy this kind of earthy, skunky aroma.

The scent is moderately strong, especially when unrolled, but nothing can be smelled when the joint is inside the plastic tube.

Taste 4/5
This pre-roll burns impressively smooth and has a lovely, complex taste. The flavor is very earthy and woodsy. There are subtle hints of dark chocolate, as well.

The smoke has a vibrant tobacco flavor also, which, as a former cigarette smoker, I enjoy, although this might not suit every user. Although the flavor of the bud is excellent, I had to knock it down a point in the ratings because the brown paper Cresco Labs uses for their pre-rolled joints dulls the flavor of the flower, instead of enhancing it.

Effect 5/5
The effects of the Pheno 51 pre-roll were intense and immediate. I felt relaxed and engaged, as soon as I started smoking. A few minutes after smoking the joint, a feeling of euphoria hit, as well. The effects of this strain are surprisingly energizing for an Indica-dominant hybrid. I can see why this strain is so popular for treating depression, anxiety, and pain management, in general. The effects of Pheno 51 make it a truly perfect hybrid because it is calming, yet energizing.

Product price: $19.96

I would recommend the Pheno 51 pre-roll to almost anyone. Not only does the strain provide a perfect balance between relaxation and productivity, but the pre-rolls from Cresco Labs are especially pleasant to smoke. As mentioned earlier, the woodsy tobacco flavor might not be appealing to all cannabis users, but for my taste, it is a near-perfect product that I would highly recommend.

This is the first product I’ve tried from Cresco Labs that really blew me away, and it was exciting to try a strain that was bred by the same company that is selling me my weed. I was impressed with how slow, smooth, and evenly the joint burned, as well as the delicious, complex flavor.

A trip to Sunnyside is always a mixed bag. On one hand, they have a wonderful variety of high-quality products that are listed in an up-to-date menu on the website — the best selection in the city. On the other hand, almost three months into recreational legalization in Illinois, and Sunnyside still can’t figure out a system that allows recreational customers to get in and out in less than two hours.

The best part about Sunnyside is that they have a great website that keeps up on their inventory. The website includes prices (before tax), as well as THC and CBD content for each batch. It would be nice if the website included pictures of the flower-like it does for the vape carts, rather than images of the logo of the producer.

Where a month ago they could hardly keep a gram of CBD in stock, today they vary from four to eight flower options of flower, including some half-ounces, three or four pre-rolls, and an extensive selection of vapes and edibles. While they have a wide selection of indicas, sativas, and hybrids, they are doing a good job in stocking popular strains like, Wedding Cake and OG 18, as well as unique strains developed by Cresco Labs, the cultivator that owns Sunnyside dispensaries, like Pheno 51.

Overall, a trip to Sunnyside is always a hassle, but I go to Sunnyside for the product, not the experience, and the product never disappoints.

Right now, Sunnyside Lakeview is the only dispensary in Chicago that hasn’t suspended recreational sales, until further notice.
